Laparoscopic Spays

We are now able to offer Laparoscopic Spays at Southview Vets

At Southview, we pride ourselves in offering the highest standard of services for your pet. Our highly trained veterinary surgeons are now available to offer laparoscopic spaying as an alternative option to a standard bitch spay.

What is a Laparoscopic Spay?

Traditionally, a bitch spay involves removing both the ovaries and uterus (ovariectomy) through an open incision in the abdomen. Laparoscopic/Keyhole spays are now available in which only the ovaries are removed (ovariectomy). Many years of research have shown this to be a safe and effective spay technique.

Laparoscopic spays are a keyhole surgery, performed through two very small 5 – 10 mm incisions, instead of one larger several centimetre incision used for traditional spays. Through these tiny incisions, we use an endoscopic camera and specialised equipment to perform the surgery.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Neutering

Laparoscopic surgery has many advantages over traditional surgery. The benefits of keyhole include:

  • Reduction of post operative pain compared with traditional surgery
  • Reduced recovery time - 2 to 3 days, compared with the normal 10 days
  • No sutures for your pet to lick or chew
  • Studies show a reduction in post operative complications following laparoscopic spay

Cost/ Enquiries:

Laparoscopic spays are more expensive than a conventional spay due to the specialised equipment and training involved, so if you would like an estimate then please call the surgery.

To see if your pet is a suitable candidate, or if you have any further questions about keyhole surgery, then please call the clinic and ask to speak to one of our vets or nurses.
